Keep Your Vehicle Running Smoothly & Safely All Year Long
At JS Concepts Automotive & Repair, we understand that regular maintenance is crucial for preventing costly repairs and extending the lifespan of your vehicle. While many services are needed only a few times a year, there are a few essential items that should be checked monthly to keep your car, truck, or SUV in top condition.
Here’s a simple Monthly Vehicle Maintenance Checklist you can follow — or bring your vehicle to us, and we’ll take care of it for you!

1. Brake System Check
Your brakes are one of the most important safety systems in your vehicle.
- Listen for squealing or grinding sounds
- Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir
- Inspect brake pedal feel – it shouldn’t feel soft or spongy
- Look for signs of fluid leaks near the wheels or under the hood
If you notice any signs of wear or reduced braking performance, schedule a brake inspection right away.
2. Battery Inspection
Heat, cold, and time all take a toll on your vehicle’s battery. Monthly checks can prevent unexpected breakdowns.
- Check for corrosion on terminals
- Ensure secure connections
- Inspect the battery casing for cracks or bulges
- Test voltage if you have access to a multimeter (12.6V is ideal when off)
Need help? JS Concepts offers quick and accurate battery testing and replacements.
3. Fluid Levels
Keeping fluids topped off ensures smooth operation and prevents major damage.
- Engine oil level – check with dipstick; top off or change if dirty
- Coolant levels/antifreeze – ensure it’s at the correct level and color
- Transmission fluid – inspect level and color (reddish and clean is ideal)
- Brake fluid – should be between min and max lines
- Power steering fluid – top off if low
- Windshield washer fluid – always good to keep full
Low or dirty fluids are early warning signs of leaks or system wear.
4. Tire Condition & Pressure
Underinflated or worn tires affect handling, fuel economy, and safety.
- Check tire pressure with a gauge (use manufacturer’s specs)
- Inspect tread depth – at least 2/32″ (use the penny test)
- Look for uneven wear, bulges, or embedded objects
- Rotate tires regularly – every 5,000–7,000 miles
Don’t forget to inspect your spare tire, too!
5. Suspension & Steering Check
Your suspension system absorbs road shock and helps maintain control.
- Listen for clunking or rattling sounds over bumps
- Check for uneven tire wear, which can signal alignment or suspension issues
- Feel for excessive bouncing or pulling to one side while driving
If you notice poor handling, it may be time for a suspension inspection.
6. Exhaust System Condition
A healthy exhaust system reduces emissions and noise while improving engine performance.
- Listen for loud or unusual exhaust noises
- Inspect for rust or holes in the muffler and tailpipe
- Watch for visible emissions – smoke may indicate engine trouble
- Check undercarriage for hanging or loose components
Unusual exhaust symptoms? Let our technicians pinpoint the issue.
7. Lights, Wipers, and Other Essentials
Visibility is crucial year-round — especially in rainy or dark conditions.
- Test headlights, brake lights, and turn signals
- Replace burnt-out bulbs promptly
- Inspect wiper blades for cracks or streaking
- Top off washer fluid
- Check Air Filter
Also, take a moment to listen for unusual sounds, check dashboard warning lights, and review your owner’s manual for any vehicle-specific checks.
